Title:  Health Physics Aspects of Radon Gas in Building by Steven E. Rademacher, PhD, CHP

Abstract:  This continuing education talk will cover practical concepts of radon gas in building pertinent to health physicists. The talk will cover the history of concerns over radon gas exposures and historical guidelines for exposure limits/controls. There will be a discussion of practical concepts of radon exposure assessments, with particular attention to exposures in workplaces, and assessment strategies.  The talk will cover some of the adverse health risk estimates based on epidemiological studies.

Lunch Included  12pm – 1pm

1pm – 3pm
Title: Optimum Selection of Field Survey Instruments by John L. Bliss, CHP
Abstract: When planning a survey that requires the measurement of radioactivity or dose rate, it is important to select the best instrument.  Often an instrument that is easily available, or good enough, is selected which can lead to incorrect measurements that either do not detect hazards or that report hazards that do not exist. The advantages and disadvantages of several instrument types will be discussed as well as their limitations in various environmental conditions.

3pm – 5pm
Title:
“Duck and Cover-It’s Back!” Modeling an Improvised Nuclear Device (IND); and Key Planning Factors: Recovering from a Radiological Terrorism Incident (An RDD in Denver, Colorado) by Ken Groves, FHPS
Abstract: “This presentation covers information concerning both an IND and an RDD.  Both elements of the presentation are products of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and used widely in training Emergency Managers and other decision makers who are responsible for writing local and state Radiological/Nuclear Response Plans.  Timely actions taken by the population affected can provide significant reductions in exposure to radiation.”

Title: “Federal Radiological Response Teams” by Ken Groves, FHPS
Abstract: “This presentation reviews Federally-funded radiological response teams.  These include state teams, National Guard WMD Civil Support Teams (in every U.S. state and territory), and  Teams from the Federal agencies: DoD, DOE, EPA, CDC and VA.  While all emergencies are local; a number of state and Federal agencies are available to help with radiological/nuclear incidents in a timely manner.  Except in major incidents, the responding agencies report to and work for the local Incident Commander.”

Abstract Due Date: 9 March 2018
